Distinguished and Famous people from Wakefield Region
🏛️ Steele Hall
Steele Hall was born in Balaklava in 1928 and grew up on his family's farm at Owen. Entering state parliament in 1959, he became South Australian premier in 1968 after succeeding Thomas Playford as party leader. His subsequent career crossed party divisions and three legislatures, including service in the Senate and the House of Representatives. More than three decades in parliament included many years on the opposition or cross-benches. The Wakefield region supplied the farming background and early life behind a politician whose career continued well beyond the premiership.
🏎️ Jack Brabham
Jack Brabham won his first Australian Grand Prix at Port Wakefield in October 1955, driving a Cooper-Bristol. The result gives the town a direct place in Australian motor-racing history, years before Brabham’s name became synonymous with world championship success. The circuit hosted a national event on a modest stretch of South Australian ground, and a later plaque marked the fiftieth anniversary of the victory. His association here is a race and a result: Port Wakefield was the setting for a significant early success in a career that would eventually carry Australian engineering and driving talent onto the world stage.
⛪ John Verco
John Verco moved to Balaklava in 1877 and became a foundation member of its Church of Christ. He taught and preached, also sharing Sunday services at Dalkey as neighbouring congregations developed. Early meetings in local homes led to plans for a chapel, opened in 1878. His contribution belongs to the voluntary organising behind those institutions: finding speakers, conducting services and sustaining small groups across a farming district. He later returned to Adelaide, but the Balaklava years formed a specific chapter in a long association with South Australian churches.
